Theatre Play ’1984.’ – A Powerful Warning to Modern Society
On the 4th of November 2025, students of our school had the opportunity to watch the theatre play “1984”, performed by the international theatre group TNT Theatre. The play is adapted from George Orwell’s novel of the same name, one of the most significant works of modern literature.
The story revolves around a dark vision of a dystopian future in which the state monitors every aspect of its citizens lives. The main characters, Winston and Julia, try to resist the system through love and rebellion, but their search for freedom turns into a tragic struggle against an all-powerful regime. Through its depiction of “Thought Crime” and the destruction of language, the play powerfully warns of the danger of losing individuality and free thought.
The performance left a strong impression on the students and encouraged them to reflect on today’s world, where themes such as surveillance, fake news, and manipulation remain relevant. The tense atmosphere and convincing acting made 1984 a truly special theatrical experience. The combination of a powerful message about human freedom, truth, and dignity with a modern stage interpretation left a deep and lasting impression on the audience. Overall, the play stands as a powerful reminder that Orwell’s warning remains just as relevant today, just as the message itself says: “Big Brother is still watching.”

‘Few feelings compare to discovering the beauty of an art form, and even fewer compare to being genuinely moved by a story. Although I’ve, regrettably, never been interested in theatre, the TNT theatre group’s rendition of George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984 has both opened the doors of live performance to me and resonated with me deeply.
I’ve always been intrigued by the novel ,yet for to one reason or another, I have yet to give it a proper read. Still, it’s themes of censorship, surveillance and manipulation interested me due to the current political and social climate of the world, so I signed up to go watch the play adaptation by the aforementioned TNT theatre group. It turned out to be a fantastic choice. Not only was the story of 1984 extremely thought-provoking, the play itself was superb.
This was the first time I witnessed professional theatre actors on stage, and I found myself amazed at how visceral and brilliant the performances were. It’s one thing to witness great performances in movies and TV shows but experiencing it in the flesh is an entirely different beast.
The sound and stage design also warrant a mention due to how immersive and creative they were. It truly brought the feelings of isolation, fear and intrigue to life in a way that enriched the worldbuilding.
The script was hilarious and witty, but it also knew when to perform the writing equivalent of a gut-punch, reminding us of how dark the story really is.
All in all, I was delighted by the play. It was easy to get sucked into the world that was first presented by Orwell, but only truly brought to life by the TNT theater group.’
